Why Your Business Doesn’t Need Social Media

Everybody knows that social media is a fad that will soon run its course. The steam engine, the light bulb, the automobile, the pyramids of Giza, the Internet: they were all created without the use of social media, which strongly suggests that social media is a frivolous and worthless device. You can spend the entire day reading why your business needs social media, but here’s why your business doesn’t need social media.

Social media was invented for selfies, food pictures, and cat videos.

This is undisputed fact. Nobody uses social media for anything useful… right? It’s safe to say that social media has yet to fulfill its potential to inform, educate, and unite people across the globe, but that doesn’t mean that it’s useless. Families use social media to stay connected, friends use social media to stay in touch, and businesses use social media to promote brand awareness and bring in new customers. Useful or no, there are one billion active users on Facebook and 320 million active users on Twitter. If you choose not to use social media, you’re missing out.

Billboards just make more sense.

Why sink money into some weird millennial fad when you can go with a reliable, tried-and-true, American made billboard, or some other form of traditional media? You can at least target a specific audience on social media, which isn’t really true for billboards. A billboard may be limited to those driving on Route 66, but only westbound traffic and rubbernecks. Social media gives you access to the information superhighway (this may no longer be a thing), and you can target the audience that makes the most sense. Facebook, for example, lets you target an audience based on age, gender, location, language, and interests.

You have to pay to get results on social media.

This is sort of true. It’s becoming increasingly difficult to get visibility without spending some money on paid advertising, and most businesses will also benefit from hiring social media experts to manage their social media accounts. But why should you expect promotion to be free? There are still ways to be successful on social media without dumping a bunch of money into it, but it doesn’t hurt to invest in your business.

Social media is an illusion.

People can tailor their social media account to make themselves look like something that they aren’t. It’s not necessarily a real reflection of a person or business, so it’s worthless… right? While it’s possible to whip up an elaborate hoax and fake a trip around the world on your social media account, that’s not really going to help your business. The point is that social media is a powerful tool that shapes public perception, which is a really good reason why you should make your business look good. It might not be fair to judge a business by their Facebook page, but it happens all the time. A Twitter account with a lone tweet from 5 years ago is the equivalent of a storefront with boards on the windows.

It’s time to confess. Your business really does need social media. You may not have the time to build up your social media accounts, however. We would love to help you with that. Contact us today to see how we can help you!
